Risks of Steroid Injections for Morton’s Neuroma – Expert Guidance

Steroid injections are sometimes recommended for Morton’s neuroma to help relieve pain. While often safe, they are not without risks. At The London Podiatry Centre, Consultant Podiatric Surgeon Ron McCulloch has performed thousands of injections and emphasises the importance of informed decision-making.

Possible complications include:

  • Nerve damage if injections are not ultrasound guided.
  • Tendon rupture if steroid infiltrates surrounding tissues.
  • Skin and fat atrophy, causing thinning or loss of padding in the foot.
  • Steroid flare reactions, leading to short-term pain and swelling.
  • Joint or capsule damage, which may worsen deformities in the toes.

While serious side effects are rare, patients must understand these risks. At our clinic, we always begin with conservative care, and when appropriate, offer innovative alternatives such as cryosurgery or radiofrequency treatment, which may be safer long-term solutions.
