Are Foot Lumps Dangerous?

The vast majority of lumps that develop in the foot are benign (non-cancerous). In fact, after over 30 years of experience and thousands of cases, we have seen only one or two malignant tumours of the foot. However, early and accurate assessment is always important to exclude any serious pathology and ensure appropriate management.

Common Types of Lumps, Growths and Masses in the Foot

Fibromas

  • Often develop within the plantar fascia or skin.
  • May present between the metatarsals or under the arch.
  • Usually easily excised with excellent surgical outcomes when indicated.

  • Fluid-filled sacs that develop near joints or tendons.
  • Often aspirated (drained) under ultrasound guidance.
  • Recurrences may occasionally require surgical removal.

  • Soft fatty lumps located under the skin.
  • Rarely require treatment unless they grow, interfere with footwear or become cosmetically undesirable.

  • Inflamed fluid-filled cushions that enlarge and create discomfort.
  • Usually treated with aspiration, steroid injections, or footwear adjustments.

  • Extra bone formation due to arthritis or biomechanical overload.
  • Surgery can often remove these bony prominences.
  • If tendons or ligaments are involved, more complex reconstructive surgery may be required.

  • Result from retained foreign objects such as glass, wood, or splinters.
  • Often cause longstanding lumps or local irritation.
  • High-resolution ultrasound is the diagnostic tool of choice.
  • Surgical removal is readily performed in our specialist theatre.

Although primarily a nerve compression problem, may present as a small lump between the toes.

  • Rare benign growths such as dermatofibromas, vascular lesions, or nerve sheath tumours.
  • Malignant lesions are extremely rare but are always considered and fully investigated if clinically suspected.

Full Diagnostic Assessment at The London Podiatry Centre

We use a multi-step diagnostic process to ensure every lump is correctly evaluated:

  • High-resolution diagnostic ultrasound (real-time soft tissue imaging)
  • MRI scanning where required for deeper or more complex lesions
  • Careful clinical examination and detailed history
  • Onward referral to expert oncologists if necessary in the rare event of malignancy concerns

Our advanced imaging allows us to assess not just size and location but also internal structure, blood flow, and any connection to nearby nerves, tendons or ligaments.

Treatment Options for Foot Lumps

A variety of foot lump related treatment options on offer at The London Podiatry Centre.

Non-Surgical Options

  • Aspiration (drainage of cysts and bursae)
  • Steroid injections to reduce inflammation and fluid accumulation
  • Footwear adjustments where appropriate

  • On-site specialist operating theatre allows safe outpatient removal of most benign lumps under local anaesthetic.
  • Surgical excision for fibromas, bony lumps, lipomas, foreign bodies, or recurrent cysts.
  • Complex reconstruction may be necessary if tendons, ligaments or joint capsules are involved.

In the rare event of a suspected malignancy, we ensure immediate referral to the appropriate medical or surgical oncology team for urgent evaluation and care.
