Mid foot pain

The midfoot consists of a series of many small complex joints. An unstable foot can result in excessive compressional stresses on these joints with subsequent pain. If the problem is not controlled then pain can develop to the extent that arthritis forms. In most instances patients with midfoot pain require good mechanical control having first been mechanically and gait analysed. A rigid or semi-rigid orthotic is often essential to buffer and support the joints.

The centre uses special ultrasound-guided injection techniques to resolve symptoms when conservative care is not successful. Surgical fusion of the joints is sometimes undertaken if necessary.

CASE STUDY

This patient required extensive surgery to correct a severe bunion and lesser toe deformity with mid foot arthritis.

The wire in the great toe was removed a few weeks after surgery. The patient had similar surgery on the other foot where the operation resolved a long history of severe foot pain.
